DR Jaya’s Philosophy

My work ethic is to always provide the highest standard of clinical care in a friendly approachable manner. After all, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Dedication, passion, reflection and humility are the foundation blocks to a happy and fulfilling life. Putting this portfolio together has been a satisfying experience and has allowed me to reflect on the smiles I have improved to date; I hope you enjoy browsing through some of my clinical cases thus far.

University

I can honestly say I made the most of my university experience. A work hard, play harder attitude served me well and I managed to walk away from the Barts and the London Medical School as the only student to have attained a distinction grade in all five years of study and a handful of awards. Most important to me, I also left with invaluable life skills and made some lifelong friends, both of which were instrumental in defining my dental career.

Postgraduate

As a young dentist, I have focussed heavily on postgraduate education and completed a PGCert in Dental Education, and an MSc in Orthodontics at the King’s College London. I was awarded a prize for the highest grade in my MSc. I undertook my specialist training at one of the most competitive posts for orthodontic training in the UK, rotating between King’s College Hospital and St George’s Hospital. It is during this post where my passion for Orthodontics unfolded and I ultimately passed my specialist examination (Membership in Orthodontics) in 2020.

Career

After completing a successful Dental Foundation Training Year (DFT), I applied for a DCT position through national recruitment and obtained a Restorative position at Barts and the London Dental Hospital. The role involved an intensive introduction to Restorative dentistry and served as the perfect training ground to refine the motor skills that I believe are the basis of any speciality training. I subsequently moved to Bristol for a DCT2 post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery where I worked in cleft clinics, assisted in theatres for cleft repairs, osteotomies, and exposure and bonding of canines. I also worked an on-call rota managing facial trauma and emergencies.

These experiences gave me the skillset to apply and be successful in Specialty Training in Orthodontics. This 3 year training programme honed in my Orthodontic clinical skills providing evidence-based orthodontic treatment for a range of complex malocclusions in a range of patients. I learned diagnostic and problem solving skills as well as effective communication and management with patients and parents. My Specialist exams were delayed due to Covid which meant I sat the most important exams 5 weeks after the most important life event when my baby boy was born. He then welcomed his baby brother in 2021. In 2019, together with my husband, we bought a failing six-surgery mixed dental practice and set out to turn it around. Following the success of which, we went on to purchase an additional nine-chair practice in 2021.
